Today in this digital world, where the signature of an individual or an organisation is done digitally, commonly known as Digital Signature Certificate . In short form, it is known as DSC, issued by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) Of India.

According to the CCA notification of 26th June 2020, Class 1 and 2 digital signatures will be suspended from 1st January 2021 onwards. Now only class 3 DSC will be issued by the Controller of Certifying Authorities. This certificate will be issued for both personal and commercial business purposes.

What are the Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 Digital Signature Certificates (DSC)?


There were previously three different classes of Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) available, but now you can only apply for a class 3 DSC. To learn more about DSC class 3 and how you can apply for it, refer to the below information.

  1. Class 1 DSC: This certificate is for both business and personal use. It is commonly applied to those businesses where the risk of losing data is at a basic level.

  3. Class 3 DSC: This certificate also comes with both business purposes, i.e. for personal and private uses. It is commonly applied to those businesses where the risk of losing data is very high.

What are changes that take place From 1.1.2021?


Changes that take effect from 1.1.2021 are as follows:

  • Class 1 & 2 DSC certificate will be demolished from 1st january 2021.

  • For the government DSC you will need a video.

  • As of 1 January 2021, there will be no paper based DSC.

  • After approval all the DSC’s can be downloaded within 30 days.

  • Class 3 DSC will be used in all the departments including the class 1 and class 2 departments.

  • From 01.01.2021 onwards, Certifying Authority (CA) shall only issue Class 3 individual signing certificates (both for organizational and personal purposes) to subscribers on tokens.

How to Apply for a Class 3 DSC?

No, you won't lose any benefits after the discontinuation of Class 1 and Class 2 Digital Signature Certificates. Class 3 Digital Signature will serve all the same purposes, such as for Income Tax, GST, E-Ticketing, ROC, Tenders, etc. However, there is a catch to all of these modifications. Class 3 Digital Signature Certificates will cost you more than Class 1 and Class 2 GST.

Effect of the changes

  • The system will automatically reject all pending downloads, so certifying authorities will need to download the DSC from the system.
  • It will result in the rejection of even the previously approved DSCs if they are not downloaded on or before December 31st, 2020.
  • Conversion from DSC 2 to DSSC 3 will take place automatically.
  • All digital signature certificates that have been generated but not verified in their entirety will be rejected and invalidated as of December 31st, 2020.
